Collected in this volume are eight stories by leading Korean contemporary writers which provide deeply moving insights into the human condition. All reflect a common concern with the social realities of the 1980s, with sadness and triumph emerging as unifying themes. Sadness because many of the characters have been touched, in one way or another, by the war's legacy, and triumph because they manage to transform their sufferings into blessings through their sense of humanity. As these stories strongly reveal, the humanity springs from powerful family bonds and a deep nostalgia for the past, two characterisitc traits of the Korean people.
