The present issue of MUSEUM International is a first attempt to compare two issues that have rarely been juxtaposed hitherto: women and heritage. It proposes a gender-oriented approach to heritage, containing articles that offer an insight into the key role that women have played in shaping and preserving world cultural heritage in the past and the role that they still play today. It provides the opportunity to redress an imbalance in recognising the role women play in culture and upholding their right to access it. In many societies, this right is deliberately flouted and is often unknown. Be they the creators or the custodians of our heritage, they are essential to it. They participate fully in our rich and diverse cultural life.
