This issue will be devoted to World Heritage sites in the Russian Federation.
There are currently twenty-four Russian sites on the World Heritage List. This issue will take a look at them all, from the historic city centres of Saint Petersburg and Yaroslavl; the natural sites of Putorana Plateau and the Volcanoes of Kamchatka; the Kremlin and Red Square in Moscow and the Kazan Kremlin; to transboundary sites such as the Curonian Spit and Struve Geodetic Arc – conveying the vast beauty and architectural splendour of this vast country.On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the World Heritage Convention in 2012, an in-depth article on the early history of the World Heritage Convention will describe its origin and successes. A message by S. Lavrov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, and an interview with H.E. Mrs Eleonora Mitrofanova, Chair of the World Heritage Committee and Ambassador of the Russian Federation to UNESCO, will also be featured, as well as a message from UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova.
