Conservation and sustainability are ongoing challenges for World Heritage sites, and the World Heritage Centre has worked closely on these themes with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), an Advisory Body for the World Heritage Convention.
In preparation for the World Conservation Congress, IUCN’s international gathering of nature experts to be held in Hawaii (United States) from 1 to 10 September 2016, World Heritage will look at sustainable development and conservation issues at various sites, and will present the two Hawaiian World Heritage sites, Papahānaumokuākea and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The issue will also feature an interview with Aroha Mead, Chair of IUCN’s Commission on Environmental, Economic and Social Policy.
